Devin Gardner provides security blanket for final three games
Since 2000, Michigan's No. 2 quarterbacks have started just 12 games while the Wolverines No. 1 signal-callers have started 158 contests. U-M's backups have proved capable, though, going 9-3 in those opportunities following Devin Gardner's first career victory starting under center.
The junior follows in the footsteps of John Navarre (4-0 in four starts in 2000), Ryan Mallett (3-0 in three starts in 2007) and Nick Sheridan (1-3 in four starts in 2008).
"We had confidence in Devin," redshirt sophomore strongside linebacker Jake Ryan said. "He played quarterback throughout the week of practice, and he was doing really well for us. Just coming in from that receiver position, I think he really progressed in what he was doing that whole time. He definitely looked good."
