Appling delivers as go-to guy for Spartans
EAST LANSING - Although he will probably never be the vocal leader that Draymond Green was, junior point guard Keith Appling has shown a similar capacity for making plays when Michigan State needs them most.
The former Detroit Pershing star did it in a win over Kansas. And he did it again on Tuesday night against Boise State.
With his team clinging to a two-point lead with 24 seconds left in the game, Tom Izzo called a 30-second timeout.
"I said to him, 'it's time big boy,'" said Izzo, "'you wanted the stage, you got it. so bring it home.'"
Appling penetrated the Boise State defense and scored the most important two points of the game.
"We kind of cleared it out in that last one," said Izzo. "They were in a zone and we still did. He still found a way to make a play. He is a phenomenal athlete and very good with his right or left hand. That's what makes him more effective."
