DotComp: A 'think piece' on Dawson
EAST LANSING - Tom Izzo has been trying to get Branden Dawson to play with ideal energy level for a few weeks. Saturday at halftime, Dawson decided to listen and do something about it.
The sophomore forward had 10 points and 8 rebounds in the second half, finishing with 14 and 11 in a difference-making display in helping Michigan State pull away for an 84-61 victory over Purdue.
Dawson's re-charged motor helped Michigan State outscore the Boilermakers 48-31 in the second half. At halftime, Izzo and his staff provided the jumper cables.
"At halftime, our video coordinator showed us some plays off the TV and there was a play when I didn't rotate over to help Nix or I didn't stunt or I didn't cut out or I didn't run," Dawson said.
That's a long list. A similar list existed during the loss at Minnesota too. Although Dawson put up good numbers against the Gophers, lapses in team defensive responsibilities resulted, by one count, in at least four baskets for Minnesota.
Izzo had some video-watching sessions with Dawson throughout the course of the week. But through the first half of this game against Purdue, those sessions weren't seeming to have much of an impact.
