Maize N' View Part II: Grading Michigan's defense

The Michigan defense was expected to take a small step back in 2012 after a wildly successful campaign a year earlier, and it would, but just barely thanks to the emergence of the defensive line and the standout player of its linebackers, including Kenny Demens.

Defensive Line: Michigan's defensive MVP in 2011 was Mike Martin. Its second-best defensive player was likely Ryan Van Bergen. Both were linemen, and both graduated, leaving tremendous holes for the Wolverines to fill.

Coordinator Greg Mattison was creative in the spring, moving senior Craig Roh from rush end to strongside end to assume Van Bergen's critical post while junior Jibreel Black moved from rush end to defensive tackle.
