Brust discusses picking the Hawkeyes
After visiting Iowa earlier this week, when Ben Brust went to bed on Tuesday evening, he knew which college he would be attending. On Wednesday, he made it official and called Coach Todd Lickliter to let him know he would be a Hawkeye in 2010.
"I called Coach Lickliter and he said that I made his day. We had a real exciting conversation. Then I called Coach Walthall and he said I made his month. Then I called Coach Cornette. He is a great guy and we had a great talk," Brust said.
The 6-foot-2 guard also had to make some tough calls to the coaches at Butler, Stanford, Northerwestern and others that offered him on Wednesday.
"That was the worst part because I have dealt with so many high character coaches and great people at the other schools. It was hard to say no to so many people because I had built good relationship with them, so it was hard," he said.
After hitting the road with his mother this month for one last look at several schools he was considering, Brust sat down with this family and coaches and they were very supportive of his decision.
"I sat down with my family and a couple coaches and I presented them with why I wanted to go to Iowa. From basketball, to academics, to the campus, it fit me perfect as a person and a player. I really think it is the best place for me and I am 100% certain of that."
Perhaps the final piece of the puzzle for Brust came on Tuesday morning when he and his good friend and current Hawkeye, Cully Payne, woke up early and did what they love to do, get some shots in at their future home, Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
"Cully did a great job because I realized on Tuesday morning when we woke up at 7:15 and went over to shoot at Carver that I want to be able to do this all the time."
Brust is Iowa's second verbal commitment in the Class of 2010. Already committed to Iowa is forward Cody Larson from South Dakota. Iowa has two scholarships that remain open for the Class of 2010.
