By The Numbers: 2013 O-Line is most talented in a decade

On paper, Michigan's 2013 offensive line corps will be the most talented the Wolverines have featured in more than a decade. The 14 scholarship linemen possess an average of 3.86 stars, surpassing even the pedigree of U-M's vaunted 2000 OL unit.

  • With the addition of four four-stars and three-star Dan Samuelson in the 2013 recruiting class, the Maize and Blue will feature a five-star (redshirt freshman Kyle Kalis), nine four-star linemen (including fifth-year senior tackles Taylor Lewan and Michael Schofield) and a trio of three-stars next fall.

  • In 2014, with the commitment of four-star Mason Cole on Monday, Michigan will boast an average of 3.85 stars per lineman, a tally that will rise or fall depending on how U-M fills out the rest of this class.

  • Not surprisingly, the Rich Rodriguez era (2008-10) were lean years on the offensive line, with the unit boasting star averages of 3.43, 3.47 and 3.46, respectively. Those three seasons represent three of just four since 2000 that Michigan has not had at least a 3.50 average.

  • In Brady Hoke's first season in 2011, U-M made due with its poorest collection of talent (on paper), with 10 scholarship linemen averaging only 3.40 stars per athlete.

  • While depth is improving, it continues to be a concern, especially compared to the Lloyd Carr era. From 2000-2007, Michigan had about 16 linemen (15.8) to work with during any given season. During Rodriguez's three seasons, that number fell to 14 scholarship linemen per campaign. In Hoke's first three years (including 2013), he's had a measly 12 (11.7) to coach up.

Here is a look at the past 15 offensive line units, the number of scholarship athletes and their average star.
