U-M ranked 17th in preseason coaches' poll
Tear another page from the calendar; it's Aug. 1, and that means college football officially kicks off in mere weeks.
As teams begin to gear up for fall camp - and all coaches have talked about their optimism heading into 2013 at various conference media day - USA Today has released its official coaches' preseason Top 25.
There is no surprise at the top: the two-time reigning national champions, Alabama, sit squarely at the top, with 58 of the possible 62 first-place votes. No. 2 Ohio State (three votes) and No. 6 Texas A&M (one vote) garnered the other four first-place votes.
The SEC once again dominates the top of the polls, with five schools in the top 10: No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 7 South Carolina and No. 10 Florida.
The Big Ten placed five teams in the poll, just one of which cracked the top 15: No. 2 Ohio State, No. 17 Michigan, No. 18 Nebraska, No. 22 Northwestern and No. 23 Wisconsin.
Michigan State was the third team left out of the poll, garnering 89 points in the voting. As for the other Big Ten teams, Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Purdue and Iowa did not receive any votes for the poll. Penn State is held out of the voting, because of the ongoing NCAA sanctions.
