By The Numbers: Devin Gardner does more with less

With one game remaining in the season, Devin Gardner's junior campaign already ranks among the top 15 all time in terms of pass efficiency rating. Gardner has accumulated a mark of 146.07 to list 14th in the Michigan single-season annals.

  • A year ago, Gardner actually posted the fourth-best tally of all time, posting a 161.66 rating after completing 75 of 126 attempts for 1,219 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions (a minimum of 100 attempts was used to establish the single-season record).

  • Former All-American Bob Chappius is responsible for the single-best pass efficiency rating of all time, recording a mark of 176.34 in 1947. The rest of the top 10 belongs to players that quarterbacked the Maize and Blue from 1976 and on.

  • Gardner's 345 attempts are the most of any QB listed in the top 14 pass efficiency ratings, by 49 passes (the formula, criticized heavily, rewards QBs for a high yards-per-completion average).

  • Impressively, Gardner produced his statistical success without much help of a running game - the Wolverines' 130.8-yard average is, by far, the lowest output coinciding with one of the top 14 pass-efficiency campaigns.

Ten of the top 14 came while ball carriers rushed for an average of 200 yards or more while Jim Harbaugh's 1986 season was a smidge off (199.9 yards per game). In 2012, Gardner put together the fourth-best season despite the fact that in his five appearances under center, the Maize and Blue rushed for 147.2 yards per contest.
